Sam Portingale, a recent graduate from the University of South Wales, was always interested in a career in I.T but was uncertain about his career path after college. After a gap year, he pursued a computer security course, excelling with a first-class degree. His journey into cybersecurity took a significant leap when he participated in a bootcamp organised by Cyber Innovation Hub and Venture Graduates, which ultimately led to his current role as a Graduate Security Analyst at Principality Building Society.

The bootcamp, a three-week intensive training programme, provided Sam with invaluable insights into the cybersecurity industry. Structured with classroom sessions and hands-on activities facilitated by Cyber Innovation Hub’s experienced trainers, the bootcamp offered a comprehensive overview of cybersecurity topics, practical exercises such as incident response simulations, and exposure to essential tools used in the field. Combined with guidance from local employers and mock interviews to prepare participants to follow a career in cyber.

“Participating in the boot camp not only deepened my interest in cybersecurity as a career path but also gave me essential technical and personal skills needed for success in the field. With hands-on exercises, I gained practical knowledge in using cybersecurity tools and strengthened my communication and personal abilities, giving me confidence in both professional settings and everyday interactions.”

We did things such as pen testing and client debriefing. This was one of the most enjoyable things for me as we were able to see how you would interact with a client if you were to carry out a pen test.  There was also a task where we looked into a security incident and examined indicators of an incident and how we would respond to that case. Not only that, there are also the personal skills that I gained that I not only use in work but day to day like my confidence in speaking to people, even public speaking to some degree.

I think if you have an interest in a topic that is going to be covered in a boot camp, then gaining the theory is going to help you in that career also being able to work alongside professionals who are currently in the industry will give you an insight into the potential roles that you might go in to. I really recommend the bootcamp if anyone is offered the chance to take part.”

Post-boot camp, Sam secured his current role as a Graduate Security Analyst at Principality Building Society and continues to advance his cyber skills through ongoing training opportunities, including courses offered by the Cyber Innovation Hub. These courses, facilitated by Cyber Innovation Hub’s industry experts, provide him and his team at Principality Building Society with specialised knowledge and continuous learning opportunities.

“Me and my team in the Principality Building Society are taking part in the Cyber Hygiene and Awareness training course with the Cyber Innovation Hub, which is providing specialised knowledge in governance, risk management, and incident response. Some of the trainers in this current course are the same ones that were training in my bootcamp.

We’ve been covering some of the theory around governance and risk management. I think getting the theory is great, but because the sessions are being run by industry experts and I am enrolled with other members of the Principality security team who have been there far longer than I have, it allows them to give me some further context into how the theory is used in the business.”

Looking to the future, Sam envisions a long-term career in cybersecurity, aiming to transition from his current graduate contract into a permanent role.

“What I’m currently enjoying the most is learning new tools, techniques, and how they are used within the business rather than just getting the theory behind why they are needed. So I am looking forward to continuing to learn and develop in the industry and build on what I’ve already learned through university, the bootcamp and the training courses.

In the future, my hope is to secure a permanent role following my Graduate role and continue with training courses such as the ones offered by Cyber Innovation Hub to ensure that I’m always learning new things, getting better in my role, and hopefully to progress to through roles within the cyber industry.”

Sam’s journey from University to a cybersecurity career illustrates the impact of proactive learning and skill development. His experience highlights the pivotal role of specialised training programmes like boot camps and ongoing professional development initiatives in shaping successful cybersecurity professionals.
